Hello all, hope everyone is ok and not feeling to bad recently. I have been for a blood test and my results showed pth @ 12.7. The ranges on my results show a range between (1.5-7.6) I was wondering if someone could explain why some people's pth with hyperparathyroidism seems to be in ranges over 100. Is this because blood test are done differently at different places. I'm confused, again. If this is the case is there a way of converting them so that I can compare with others? Best wishing you all good health and energy to Keep going and to find answers. Regards, Liz.

P.s. Anyone having blood tests done at their local surgery should consider going to the hospital where blood is sent to the labs quicker. This should give you a more acurate result when testing pth and calcium.

Hello Lizzy,

My local hospital laboratory actually reports in pmol/L (pico moles per litre) which is the SI unit for reporting parathyroid hormone. Although my endocrinologist always liked to convert them into non SI units (pg/ml) as used in the USA.

To convert your blood calcium in USA units - multiply by 4
To convert your PTH from NHS units to USA units multiply by 9.43

Thanks Simon, I think my pth has been raised for a while but I didn't really get it! I will post my result up and see what you think? I have also read that too much Vit can be very dangerous for people with primary hyperparathyroidism. How do we get the balance right? :( I think it's important to get the right info from our specialist but I find they don't explain things very well so it's difficult to get a real perspective on things. I'm left doing my own research and trying to find out about things but then critisized when I share my findings with my GP or Endo.

Kind regards
Liz
